Julia Sweeney Honored by FFRF...

Please click the attached photos to see Julia Sweeney in this month's Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) newsletter Freethought Today.

Julia was the recipient of this year's "Emperor Has No Clothes" award which recognizes public figures who openly discuss their lack of faith/religion.

I was present at the annual meeting in San Francisco this year when Julia received the award, and she said something about the little statue actually being naked. Perhaps she'll post a picture of it on her blog sometime to verify that statement.

Julia performed "Letting Go of God" in its entirety at the convention, and was the icing on the cake for the entire weekend.

I have to say that the organizers couldn't have chosen a worse venue for the thing, though. The Holiday Inn Golden Gateway is in a rather run-down part of town, has no restaurants within walking distance (save one burger joint), and closed its own restaurant during our break and dinnertime. We were, therefore, forced to pay for parking not once, but TWICE during our one-day visit, costing us nearly $60 on top of the $75-per-person event registration. I'm no skinflint, but damn!

Anyway, we still had a good time, and got to speak with Julia afterward and get her autograph on freshly-minted CDs of "Letting Go of God" and "In the Family Way." (see below) And look at that adorable little Mulan! She also signed a few copies of the CD, and pointed out the picture of her underneath the CD in which she's sticking out her tongue! Priceless!

My family (husband and two teen sons) were at that FFRF meeting in San Francisco. The main reason we went was to see Julia perform LGOG and hear Sam Harris speak. Fabulous! We got a room on the 24th floor with a view east. The kids loved that! It didn't hurt that the Blue Angels kept flying overhead, either. Oh, and it's too late to be of use now, but we found great food (Vietnamese & Indian) on Polk St. a block away. Do you often go to FFRF conventions? This was our first, though we've seen Dan Barker when he came to Tucson. What he and Annie-Laurie accomplish together is a miracle!

I've been reading Julia's blog. I hope she doesn't feel obligated to read every single word in the comments. It's like she's running a therapy session sometimes! Interesting, but I'd like to hear more about Julia. Your comments always seem to be on track.

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for the advice about where to eat in SF, etc. I live in the East Bay, and I don't know the city all that well, so I was pretty unprepared for it all. I just assumed the hotel would have more to offer, I guess.

As for Julia's blog, I really think she DOES read all the comments. She's a real "reader," and I'm sure it's pretty easy for her, but it's amazing that she takes the time to do so, eh?

I've been contemplating offering to set up a separate Discussion Board for her. It would be rather time-consuming, but probably well worth the effort for those of us who are just dying to write more, but hold back a bit because we don't want to overwhelm Julia or the others who post/read. I'm also concerned that having a separate Board might detract people from her blog, though. I can imagine that people might get so caught up in arguing certain points that they would check the Discussion Board more than Julia's blog. I think I'll ask her about it in person in January (at TAM5).

    Thanks for posting, Rebecca!

If I die in error of judgment to find there is no God, i have lost nothing. You on their other hand if you die & err on the side to find that there is a Infinite Intelligent Creator, which you defiantly denied, you have wagered & lost infinitely more then can be recovered, your immortal soul.
